Top Ever Space Movies

1) 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)

This iconic and epic science fiction film was produced and directed by Stanley Kubrick in 1968. Written by both Stanley Kubrick and legendary novelist Arthur C Clarke it was inspired by one of Clarke’s short stories (“The Sentinel” – 1951). The plot follows the journey of a scientific expedition to Jupiter (piloted by the sentient AI Hal) which takes place after a mysterious black monolith is discovered on the moon. It’s an incredible movie and a must see if you haven’t already watched it!

2) Alien (1979)

Another iconic film here, this time directed by Ridley Scott. This science fiction-horror follows the crew of the commercial spacecraft “The Nostromo” – including Sigourney Weaver as Officer Ripley – as they try to fight off an aggressive alien which gets onto their ship. It’s another incredible film which spawned a whole franchise which is due to continue this year with “Alien: Covenant”.

3) Gravity (2013)

Gravity tells the story of the astronauts Dr Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) and Matt Kowalski (George Clooney) as they try to survive in space after their space shuttle is damaged by a field of space debris. It’s an unbelievably suspenseful film and definitely one to check out.

4) Star Wars IV: A New Hope (1977)

Star Wars (later re-named Star Wars IV – A New hope) is the epic space opera written and directed by George Lucas in 1977. It would go onto inspire a whole generation of science fiction films, novels and TV shows. Its plot follows the Rebel Alliance as they try to destroy the Galactic Empire’s latest super-weapon – the Death Star. It’s a truly icon film and was released it was the highest grossing film of all time when released – surpassing the then highest Jaws (1995). If you’re one of the few who haven’t seen Stars Wars make sure you add it to your list!

5) Interstellar (2014)

Interstellar takes place after a mysterious crop blight wipes out most of the crops humanity depend upon and threatens the survival of the species. The film follows a crew of astronauts as they travel through a worm hole to find a new home for humanity. It’s a beautiful film and one which rates very highly for scientific accuracy.

6) Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)

Guardians of the Galaxy is a superhero film produced by Marvel Studios. It follows the unlikely heroes Peter Quinn (“Star Lord”), Gamora, Rocket, Groot and Drax as they try and stop the evil Ronan. It’s a very funny film and one you can enjoy even if you don’t like superhero films. Check it out!

7) Serenity (2005)

Serenity is a continuation of the short-lived cult TV show “Firefire”, both created by Joss Whedon. Taking place in 2517 it quite simply tells the story of the crew of the ship “Serenity”. It’s a must see for any fans of the “Firefly” series”!

8) Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982)

The Wrath of Khan was the second film which was produced based on the Star Trek universe. The plot features the captain of the USS Enterprise, Captain Kirk (played by William Shatner) as he faces off against the evil Khan (played by Ricardo Montalbán).
